Belle de Jour (1967)

Beautiful young housewife Séverine Serizy cannot reconcile her masochistic fantasies with her everyday life alongside dutiful husband Pierre. When her lovestruck friend Henri mentions a secretive high-class brothel run by Madame Anais, Séverine begins to work there during the day under the name Belle de Jour. But when one of her clients grows possessive, she must try to go back to her normal life.

Never before has Bunuel?s view of the spectacle seemed so obliquely Ophülsian in its shy gaze from behind curtains, windows and even peepholes... Buñuel was one of the few men of the left not afflicted by Puritanism and bourgeois inhibitions about the sex lives of the masses

A beautiful story capturing the feelings of a women caught into a life she doesn't know and does not know where to go. A shatter of fantasy and reality are depicted as the viewer is brought into her world where we watch turn after turn the decisions she makes and how they affect her and the people around her.

As the Violent Femmes said, "We've all been through some shit." This film captures the torturous road we all go down in pursuit of...what? It's so hard to tell. Maybe we shouldn't be pursuing it at all. How did we even begin to go down this road. I absolutely love this movie. It's vital and vulnerable. What do we really want from others? Can any one person satisfy all of our longings? Probably not. But we want them to.
