Tommy's Honour (2017)

In 1866 St Andrews, Scotland, 15-year-old Tommy Morris is an avid golfer like his legendary and pioneering father, Tom Morris, now greenskeeper for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, as well as the town's club- and ball-maker. The two-time winner of the first major golf tournament, The Open Championship, which he founded in 1860, Old Tom also established golf's standard of 18 holes per round. But young Tommy is beginning to chafe at his father's dictates, especially in the rapidly changing world they live in. Tommy soon outshines his father, winning The Open three consecutive times.

Too often, Connery's effort feels a little too easy to pass over.

A surprisingly better-than-average sports biopic with standout performances.

Kevin Crust 12 Apr 2017

It’s surprisingly affecting, but there’s a tendency to telegraph these pivotal emotional moments that in a way lessens their effect. It’s a tribute to the film’s overall craft, and especially its cast, that it’s as much a winner as it is.

The lopsided son-father narrative may provide Lowden (the director's proxy) with a star-launching role - but the more Old Tom is muted, so too is our connection to his soon-to-be broken heart.

Although co-writers Pamela Marin and Kevin Cook handle the class warfare, romance, and father-son relationship thoughtfully, it's the performances that make the film.
