The Valley of Gwangi (1969)

A turn of the century wild west show struggling to make a living in Mexico comes into the possession of a tiny prehistoric horse. This leads to an expedition to the Forbidden Valley where they discover living dinosaurs. They capture one and take it back to be put on display, leading to inevitable mayhem.

Only thee words needed: Dinosaurs and Cowboys. Oh, and the ending with the Allosaurus in the flaming Cathedral made a huge impression on me as a child.

A childhood favourite - but then how could it not be when it mixed cowboys and dinosaurs. Gwangi is another classic of stop-motion animation cinema - but even he isn't as fearsome as the old blind gypsy woman and her mischievous midget henchman!

After hearing so much negative word of mouth over the years, I didn't expect to find such a naively charming western-kaiju hybrid featuring some of Harryhausen's best stop-motion work. Sure, the plot is a complete cribbing of King Kong, but appropriately so - it was, after all, originally conceived as a sequel.

Oh POOR Gwangi! How tragic, taken from his home, exploited and then expected to have table manners TOO! If it weren't for the painfully slow 30 or 40 minutes at the beginning this would have been a VERY good movie, unfortunately it is not until they all get to the Forbidden Valley that it picks up for good. Lope was the only character i REALLY liked, i mean, he's so sweet but lead role, Tuck, is an all-round jackass, I felt more for the dinosaurs than i did the people. If you can get through the first part the rest is really exciting.
