The Time That Remains (2009)

An examination of the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 through to the present day. A semi-biographic film, in four chapters, about a family spanning from 1948 until recent times. Combined with intimate memories of each member, the film attempts to portray the daily life of those Palestinians who remained in their land and were labelled "Israeli-Arabs," living as a minority in their own homeland.

Hmm, the history of the state of Israel as seen through the eyes of a Palestinian family. That sounds a bit "worthy". So you might think but it's anything but. Whilst it might be an autobiographical film, dedicated to his parents, Suleiman's film is less about dogmatic politics but more about the surreal relationship that's endured between Israel and Palestine for the last sixty years. Suleiman plays a loose version of himself; a Tati-esque observer of all around him, who never speaks a word. The absurd humour set pieces, including a tank cannon following an oblivious Palestinian on his mobile phone to each precise moment, a drunk, suicidal neighbour using extreme logic to solve the crisis and doctors and Palestinian civilians fighting over a hospital trolley go way beyond anything even Beckett could dream up. At the same time though, there's a real emotional undercurrent, especially in the tender scenes of the deaths of his parents. It's a Kusturica-esque account of serious political history but undertaken in such a distinctive, imaginative way.

This is typical Suleiman, as anyone who saw his no less wondrous work "Divine Intervention" (2002), can testify.

Palestinian director Elia Suleiman's most eloquent and moving feature to date.

Elia Sulieman takes a deeply personal look at Palestinian/Israeli relations in this autobiographical look at the time when Israel became an official state, and Palestinians found themselves a minority. I love Sulieman's compositions and deadpan humor, but here it seems disjointed, and doesn't really add up to a satisfying whole. Still, Sulieman has a great sense of comedic timing and droll satire.

The third installment of Suleiman's Palestinian trilogy, which began with Chronicle of Disappearance and continued with Divine Intervention, is the series' most politically poignant, wryly humorous, and visually precise chapter.
