beatiful and tragic, the only problem I have with this film is that even at 2hrs 15mins its too short. A great cast, James Fox is excellent and Reeves is good in one of his last roles. Hopkins is incredible and Emma Thompsons plays her role well. Amazing.

Hopkins unique performance of 'non acting'. To many this simple butler is almost emotionless and empty, but the tiny details show the desperate desire to be loved. Beautiful sad story.

I have Only recently become a fan of Merchant Ivory Productions, after watching Howard's End for the first time, which I am a huge fan of. This film makes Howard's End look like Howard the Duck in comparison. The acting done by Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson rank as some of my favorite performances in film, and might be the best of both their careers. The poignant story of a man who hides his true feelings all his life in an attempt to be "proper" , leading to the downfall of his employer and the loss of his one true love... it was an extraordinary experience.

If there is a better acting performance in a film than Anthony Hopkin's performance in this then I'd love to see it. Hopkins is perfect in this film - I have never seen acting as a subtle as this. Even my all-time favourite Robert DeNiro hasn't bettered Hopkins in this. One of my very favourite films.
