The Remains of the Day (1993)

In interwar Britain, a rule-bound head butler's world of manners and decorum in the household he maintains is tested by the arrival of a new housekeeper. The possibility of romance and his master's cultivation of ties with the Nazi cause challenge his carefully maintained veneer of servitude.

A most brilliant screenplay from a English film directed by an American, produced by an Indian, and written by a German. Hopkins is never better, not even as Hannibal Lecter, and the film geninuely inspires with a quality of elegance and enchantment.

Such a quietly powerful drama, I was surprised, being a fan of action films, that I was so taken up in the story and characters...proof of good filmmaking

Simply brilliant! Hopkins and Thompson are outstanding in this little known movie based on Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize winning novel. As the subtle dance of love between the butler and the housekeeper is played out (the movie's central theme), the political undertow in the story and the beautiful english countryside setting helps in rendering this movie pitch perfect all around!

Not a light movie by any means.. wonderful acting.. you'd keep reflecting yourself in the end.. very good drama..

A faboulous film about Britain and class situated in the thirties and fourties in upperclass England. Here we learn about the power of tradition, the flaws of loyalty and the horror of leading someone else's life. This is written by an Asian writer, and it is curious how it often takes 'an outsider' to describe the workings of a culture. Great acting by all (even Christopher Reeve), great setting and wonderful plot.
