Liberty Heights (1999)

This semi-autobiographical film by Barry Levinson follows various members of the Kurtzman clan, a Jewish family living in suburban Baltimore during the 1950s. As teenaged Ben completes high school, he falls for Sylvia, a black classmate, creating inevitable tensions. Meanwhile, Ben's brother, Van, attends college and becomes smitten with a mysterious woman while their father tries to maintain his burlesque business.

I loved this movie - and no one seems to know about it. It was released in the year of the Matrix, but I find this character study of a bunch of jewish kids battling racial prejudices (both towards them and from them towards the black neighborhood), girl troubles, impending college acceptances, and family drama in a small suburb of 1950's Baltimore. The performances are all understated, but nuanced - the humor is comfortable, like that of A Christmas Story. The story covers a range of racial issues, but stays centered on the small cast of characters and that's what makes it work so well.

Love this movie!!! It depicts the time where segregation, both in color and religion, were big in this country. It will make you laugh, cry and hold your breath all at the same time!!

I had no idea that there was a religion other than the Christian one until I saw this movie when I was around 10 or so. Never took anything into consideration until this movie broadened my eyes. Watching it again brings back cherished memories. Good stuff!!

Fascinating look at 1950's racial tension, from the unique viewpoint of Black/Jewish interaction. Charming movie. Adrien Brody & Ben Foster are good, and Joe Mantegna is stellar.
