The Robe (1953)

Drunk and disillusioned Roman, Marcellus Gallio, wins Jesus' robe in a dice game after the crucifixion. Marcellus has never been a man of faith like his slave, Demetrius, but when Demetrius escapes with the robe, Marcellus experiences disturbing visions and feels guilty for his actions. Convinced that destroying the robe will cure him, Marcellus sets out to find Demetrius — and discovers his Christian faith along the way.

A stunning visual spectacle that should be remembered only for being the first CinemaScope movie ever released, since the direction is clunky, the plot overlong and terribly contrived (the character's conversion is never convincing) and the dialogue so full of highs and lows.

I love a Biblical epic film like Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments; the animated film The Prince of Egypt; and the 2007 film The Nativity Story for Christmas. I love those films including this film The Robe, that is based on the novel by Lloyd C. Douglas, it is an excellent film to watch around Easter time...or any time. The film (like the book) tells about the aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus through the experiences of a Roman tribune named Marcellus Gallio, who commanded the unit in charge of the crucifixion. The man goes on a journey, following the path Jesus took and meets many people whose lives Jesus had affected. Through this journey, both the tribune and also his childhood sweetheart/fiancÃ© are challenged to explore their faith and question various norms they have embraced all their life. I am thinking of reading the original book...I know that is a bit unorthodox, but that's me. You know, not many people today know of authors like Lloyd C. Douglas.

'The Rope' is corny, but it's well made and acted with an admirable degree of sincerity. The lavish scenery and grand scale are perfect examples of what made 1950's Hollywood so unique and enjoyable.
