Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) travel to Canada in order to investigate a series of confounding and brutal murders. The plot thickens when Holmes discovers that the perp is a master of disguise who could possibly be anyone in the community. The Scarlet Claw will annoy purists since it isn't based on a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it also takes place in the then-contemporary date of 1944. Still, this is a well-acted movie with a genuinely interesting mystery plot. It's also the strongest of the later Holmes movies featuring the team of Rathbone and Bruce.

A good Rathbone and Bruce Sherlock Holmes adventure as a small Canadian town is hit by a series of murders. This is how I like my Dr Watson. The dry humour, blustering buffoon type not the modern martial arts women chasing type we got in the recent re-make.

Rathbone and Bruce do justice to Conan-Doyle's characters once again in another good mystery.

You wonder why they decided to set this one in Canada. There is nothing particularly Canadian about it. It could have just as easily been set in Scotland, or Whales. However the screenwriter did do enough research to make it plausible and none of the accents made me squirm in agony. It is a good Holmsian mystery with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing. The lighting, camera work and their willingness to go dark makes this movie a cut above many of its counter parts.

Great atmosphere in one of the better Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films.
