The Lady Vanishes (1938)

On a train headed for England a group of travelers is delayed by an avalanche. Holed up in a hotel in a fictional European country, young Iris befriends elderly Miss Froy. When the train resumes, Iris suffers a bout of unconsciousness and wakes to find the old woman has disappeared. The other passengers ominously deny Miss Froy ever existed, so Iris begins to investigate with another traveler and, as the pair sleuth, romantic sparks fly.

Minor Hitchcock, but it's still damn entertaining and keeps you hooked until the end, even if you can figure out the story before all is said and done. Margaret Lockwood is not blonde, which is strange for Hitch, but she is terrific nonetheless when her acquaintance on a train goes missing, and everyone claims she was alone. The mystery unravels and all is revealed in a tight, exciting Hitchcock mystery.

One of the most fun movies ever. A woman disappears on a train ride, and all but our hero and heroine deny even seeing her aboard. Incredibly entertaining.

A Hitchcock shot heard round the world. While America had seen a few of Hitchcock's early successes, "The Lady Vanishes" had such originality and intrigue that it defined as the master of suspense, before he even made his first American film. A nightmare, an action movie, an espionage plot, its Hitchcock and some of his earliest grandeur.

Love this movie. It's witty and suspenseful and the characters are really amusing. It's clearly a commentary on Britain's attitude before and during WWII. Lots to say about bravery, ethnocentrism and the famous English stiff upper lip. I love both the hotel section and the train section. And the cricket-obsessed couple have as much chemistry as the main leads.
