interesting enough on the surface but probably wouldn't recommend this unless you're a huge holmes fan... good performance by rathbone, might be interested in watching some of the other movies he did as holmes...

One of the earliest Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone in the lead is one of the better entries in the series. Rathbone and Bruce make a wonderful team but what helps separate this from the others is the casting of a very young Ida Lupino in the menaced maiden role, usually the endangered lady was a pretty but utilitarian actress of minor note. Ida was on her way up at this point and within the year would break through to the majors in "They Drive By Night" and her star quality shines through here making her plight and the mystery more involving. The film itself has good production values and moves at a brisk pace.

Later the same year as "The Hound of the Baskervilles" came this exciting 2nd film in the long running series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Holmes and Watson aide a beautiful young woman in solving the mystery of her murdered brother. This film features the famous line "Elementary, my dear Watson

Second outing for Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson and the last for Fox before they began their tremendous B-movie run at Universal (where the staging anachronistically switched to modern day). Unfortunately, although the characterizations are already in place (and yes some hate the bumbling Watson but I have a soft spot for him), this film is no patch on the earlier Hound of the Baskervilles and lacks the zest of the later low budget series. Somehow, the key parts of fhe plot that reveal how Professor Moriarty's dastardly scheme to foil Holmes really worked have been omitted. Still, it is always reassuring to see Holmes and Watson at work.

"Elementary, my dear Watson". Not in the books, but influential nonetheless. Sherlock Holmes faces his nemesis, the diabolical Professor James Moriarty. Moriarty has a new sinister plan with doubled edged agendas and only Holmes and Watson can stop him. Lots of thrills and suspense, especially that ending climax.
