"Elementary, my dear Watson". Not in the books, but influential nonetheless. Sherlock Holmes faces his nemesis, the diabolical Professor James Moriarty. Moriarty has a new sinister plan with doubled edged agendas and only Holmes and Watson can stop him. Lots of thrills and suspense, especially that ending climax.

It was okay. I was really bothered by the characterization of Watson, who was basically turned into a bumbling idiot and appeared to be more Lou Costello then the trusty companion of Sherlock Holmes.

The second and final outing in the Fox period piece Holmes series is great as well. The series moved to Universal for the next entry, where it would stay for the remainder of the 14 films; 2 at Fox, 12 at Universal. Cast is in fine form and suspense builds well during the final two acts of the four act structured screenplay. The play that served as the basis for this film, and a stage production that Rathbone played Holmes in in 1952 - which his wife rewrote, was also the same one used for the recently discovered 1916 Sherlock Holmes film. On Blu-Ray.

The second Rathbone Holmes flick pits the titular hero against the genius James Moriarty. The general gist of Moriarty's plan is revealed in the beginning, but the audience must watch as the specifics unfold. The plan is pretty clever and not badly written. I found it pretty unfortunate that Holmes only defeated Moriarty with strength rather than wits, and the climax and ending left something to be desired.

Probably one of the better entries in the Holmes franchise, but Conan-Doyle purists will have a lot to balk at - the dithering Nigel Bruce playing Watson as strictly comedy relief being the most outrageous example. More of a crimefighter than a sleuth, Rathbone is quite good, but Ida Lupino plays against type as a Victorian damsel in distress. Lots of holes in the plot too - but overall, it's enjoyable enough.
