An exciting movie based on the famous detective.

John Rawlins, normally a minor director, did a smashing job in framing the story with moody noir-style cinematography.

Holmes Jumps ahead about 40 years and does his bit for the war effort while the series goes from Fox to Universal. Odd to see Holmes in a contemporary setting, and it's pretty clear the mystery is taking a back seat to propaganda. Still an enjoyable outing with the great atmosphere.

Holmes and Watson must outwit the terror of the German Nazi party, thrilling stuff an outstanding classic

The first "modern" era Holmes adventure. This is one of the best in the "modern" series of Universal's treatment of classic detective. This film definitely reflects its times. The war was raging in Europe and the enemy is the NAZIs. This leads to all kinds of great lines about the evilness of the NAZIs. While it may be politically incorrect in retrospect, it is a great treat to see the patriotism that rallied the sleeping giant once again.
