Beautiful Noir. I prefer the classic Holmes but this was fine.

This is the first entry in Universal's modernized version of the Sherlock Holmes series.

Have to realise that this was released during WW2 and England was taking a pounding so this was to cheer the hearts of the public and put hope and joy in their hearts. It probably succeeded

Basil is the true and only Holmes and Nigel Bruce invented the useless-sidekick. This was not an original ACD story but still one of the best on the series.
