I've always had a massive problem with the Universal Holmes series and it comes down to how Nigel Bruce portrayed Watson as some sort of bumbling idiot. Otherwise these are superbly made adaptations of Doyles stories, with this one particularly so. Rathbone has a ball as ever, the directing is first class along with the production values. Yes its dated a little in 80 odd years and wont hold the attention of todays audiences many of whom will assume that Holmes is more like Downey Jr but these films will always hold great affection in purists hearts.

One more classic Holmes/Watson Tale. I love how they kept coming up with different tales for these 2 sleuths. I truly wish they would could up with something like for modern times, not some of the stupid ones as of lately. But thank goodness there are these here...excellent stories.

This might be the only WWII installment that doesn't include wartime propaganda (save for the end speech perhaps). At least the antagonists aren't Nazis this time. Here we have more of a whodunit full of red herrings. It starts out like a haunted house story, but it strays away from that. The soldiers are fun characters, and Bruce, yet again, is there for comic relief. Nice ending as well. Based loosely on "The Musgrave Ritual." Note: Future Rat Packer Peter Lawford appears uncredited in the beginning of the film as a sailor in the bar.

Another enjoyable entry in the Rathbone/Bruce series, perhaps only slightly let down by the overt allusions to WW II and in particular Nazi and Japanese atrocities. Rathbone's little propoganda speech is understandable for the time, but a little out of place today. This is another creepy old house, murder mystery and although the villain is a fairly easy guess this time its a fun tale and the usual cast are as wonderful as ever. Halliwell Hobbes is good as a sinister, drunkard butler.

The propaganda facade is gone, but unfortunately this one's a bit limp. It's bereft of atmosphere, and even Rathbone seems a little bored. Bruce gets more to do though, which is OK. One particularly pointless sequence involves Holmes setting up a human chessboard, while using an analogous standard chess board to figure out a puzzle. When he reaches the end of the puzzle, he comes to such a generic conclusion that the human chessboard had absolutely no purpose at all. Neither did the smaller chessboard, for that matter, but Neill gets to unsubtly plant clues as to who the bad guy is. Not much of an excuse.
