The Red Badge of Courage (1951)

Henry Fleming is a young Union soldier in the American Civil War. During his unit's first engagement, Henry flees the battlefield in fear. When he learns that the Union actually won the battle, shame over his cowardice leads him to lie to his friend Tom and the other soldiers, saying that he had been injured in battle. However, when he learns that his unit will be leading a charge against the enemy, Henry takes the opportunity to face his fears and redeem himself.

A bit grainy and bloodless, but a good anti-war film, and a good facsimile of the book.

Completely devoid of emotional impact and messily structured, but Huston's direction is solid and the cinematography is marvelous. The film's flaws are more a result of the studio's lack of vision than Huston's, but they're there nonetheless.

Audie Murphy and John Huston team up for this spectacular look at the power of the group over the individual. It's wartime, and a newbie recruit frets on whether he will perform to group expectation or not when battle time arrives. It's all easier said than done, eh? Huston, obviously influenced by Hemingway, keeps the anxiety quietly amped up throughout the effort but particularly during the battles scenes. Why has no one told me of this exemplary work before?!?

Great old movie. The angst of combat without the realism of more modern was movies ala Saving Private Ryan.
