The Public Enemy (1931)

Two young Chicago hoodlums, Tom Powers and Matt Doyle, rise up from their poverty-stricken slum life to become petty thieves, bootleggers and cold-blooded killers. But with street notoriety and newfound wealth, the duo feels the heat from the cops and rival gangsters both. Despite his ruthless criminal reputation, Tom tries to remain connected to his family, however, gang warfare and the need for revenge eventually pull him away.

there is a scene in here where James comes around the corner and there is a gunner waiting for him, they used real bullets back.

watched it over, had quite an effect on me, the last shot with cagney is a work of art.

Here you can see Cagney's first lead role: he had made a few small routine pictures before this and Warners wisely had him play Tom Powers, thereby contradicting the original casting for Public Enemy. It was a very very right decision, as even an utter deadhead would have to admit he outshines EVERYONE in what is, after all, a solid and very respectable roster of support.

James Cagney is an iconic actor from the 'Golden Age' of cinema and this is one of his best movies. Modern day gangster movies owe a lot to the foundations laid by by Cagney and Edward G. Robinson.
