The Public Enemy (1931)

Two young Chicago hoodlums, Tom Powers and Matt Doyle, rise up from their poverty-stricken slum life to become petty thieves, bootleggers and cold-blooded killers. But with street notoriety and newfound wealth, the duo feels the heat from the cops and rival gangsters both. Despite his ruthless criminal reputation, Tom tries to remain connected to his family, however, gang warfare and the need for revenge eventually pull him away.

Crime may not pay, but The Public Enemy was one of the first pictures to recognize that it sure can be exciting to watch.

Cagney is great. I believe that this was his breakout film. It's a pretty gritty snapshot of the prohibition era. It also makes a halfhearted attempt not to glorify the mob story while blatently glorifying it. Good stuff.

Possibly the hardest, toughest, meanest ganster film of all. And most of the violence is off screen.This was made in '31 and they still haven't inproved on this. Cagneys' breakthrough film.

Wow. I'm amazed I'd never heard of this one. It's still Angels With Dirty Faces for my top Cagney but this is amazing. It's a cliche to say it but "they don't make them like this any more"!!! Powerful, brutal, subtle. Amazing!
