The Paradine Case (1947)

In London, barrister Anthony Keane takes the case of Maddalena Paradine, a beautiful woman accused of poisoning her blind husband. Though happily married, Keane becomes infatuated with his enigmatic client and convinced of her innocence. His obsession clouds his judgment as he builds a defense implicating her servant, André Latour—an act that leads to devastating consequences both in court and at home.

An underrated Hitchcock extravaganza. Peck stars as lawyer Anthony Keane defending Alida Valli accused of husband's murder. But that's just outer layer of a juicier subtext. In the end, Peck is left to choose between ideal and real. And the conclusion is fantastic!

Gregory Peck's off day....totally miscast. The misogny as a driver of so many characters in this movie is underplayed. Charles Laughton scene steals from Peck.

Too chatty and the story is bad, but I love it on a technical level. The cinematography is among the best in Hitchock. The shadows in this!

This Hitchcock film is a courtroom drama starring Gregory Peck amongst others. The movie is about a woman, Mrs. Paradine, whose blind husband has recently been poisoned. She is arrested accused of murdering her husband. Gregory Peck is to be her lawyer. What follows is a bit of courtroom drama mixed with a bit of romance and suspense. The film starts out rather slow and isn't all that exciting until the court scene. The courtroom part of the film is most excellent, but unfortunately only takes up about a third of the film. The acting, is much like the plot. There's nothing terribly great other than the courtroom scenes with one exception - Mrs. Paradine's character, portrayed by Alida Valli, is very well-acted. Overall, this is a decent effort, but not one of Hitchcock's best. It was the last film he made under David O. Selznick. It's worth seeing for a Hitchcock fan, but the film isn't quite good enough for me to say it's a must-see for anyone else. 77.5/100 C+ UP NEXT: Either My Fair Lady or Spellbound.

Uncle Hitchcock does courtroom drama, Pecks lawyer character falls in love with his client who is on trial for the murder of her husband, poor wifey is at home waiting for the outcome and wether her hubby is going to run of with client if she is innocent or obsess about what could have been if she is guilty, oh the joy!! decent enough but nothing particularly special about it and even Peck can't make those horrid courtroom wigs look even marginally attractive.
