Throne of Blood (1957)

Returning to their lord's castle, samurai warriors Washizu and Miki are waylaid by a spirit who predicts their futures. When the first part of the spirit's prophecy comes true, Washizu's scheming wife, Asaji, presses him to speed up the rest of the spirit's prophecy by murdering his lord and usurping his place. Director Akira Kurosawa's resetting of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" in feudal Japan is one of his most acclaimed films.

The ice cold adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth is also one of Kurosawa's best films. A story so tightly constructed and mastered with symbolism and themes, Throne of Blood is one of Kurosawa's most artistic and meaningful projects. Mifune shines here once again as the tortured protagonist Yashizu. Highly recommended.

Brilliant, a great double bill for me with "Men Behind The Sun". I mean, it is fascinating to see how full of meaning this is, even the cover has lots of interpretation. I loved the way the movie leaves it vague the idea of whether was it superstition that killed him or was it just the confidence of a presage, a foretelling of disaster, of which a wise solution was never thought of an where emotion drove Mifune's character to disobey the prophecy and then got screwed by that prophecy by his own superstitious troops. -SPOILER -I really like the last scene, where the arrow pierces his neck. That was sweet. 2nd Time: Watched it again recently, still a great film and the dramatic elements were stunning. Loved the last scene and enjoyed the acting of the female lead. Fantastic use of shadows as well.

Had the pleasure of watching this at college - not for studying Shakespeare, but for studying Kurosawa!

One of my favorite Akira Kurosawa films. A great adaption of Shakespeare's Macbeth, combined with the samurai. Flawless.

Kurosawa steals my heart without having to go into Shakespeare. Kurosawa doings Shakespeare is borderline pornographic for me.
