Now in his sixties, Joe is released from the hospital after a long battle with pneumonia and forced to confront the harsh reality of his legacy: everyone he knew had assumed he was dead, and life had gone on around him without missing a beat. Returning to his old neighborhood in Chicago's 'Patch' district, he finds his car gone, all his worldly possessions pawned by his landlord, and the apartment he's lived in his entire adult life rented out to a single mother and her eight-year-old daughter.

This male weepie is ridden with cliches (Farina's character tends to a pigeon coop on his roof, for God's sake) and climaxes with a predictable act of self-abnegation.

This film reminded me of the glory days of 70's cinema with it's bleak landscapes, wry sense of humor, unpredictability, and overall hard hitting realism. Dennis Farina gives an award worthy performance as a hustler at the end of the line, attempting to find some meaning in his life, while keeping some vicious dogs [crooked cops, scum bag associates] at bay. The film captures the scummy side of Chicago better than anything I've seen in recent, or distant memory. I loved how it flirted with the "old guy looking for his last score" cinematic cliche, and keep you guessing. This film is touching, uncompromising, and well worth seeking out.
