Pickpocket (1959)

Michel takes up pickpocketing on a lark and is arrested soon after. His mother dies shortly after his release, and despite the objections of his only friend, Jacques, and his mother's neighbor Jeanne, Michel teams up with a couple of petty thieves in order to improve his craft. With a police inspector keeping an eye on him, Michel also tries to get a straight job, but the temptation to steal is hard to resist.

A riff on Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Bresson revealing the ending in the opening text offers a sense determinism to the proceedings, underlining Michel's feeling of limited choices for living. The film captures the surfaces of Michel's life of crime, and yet, it reveals something about the presence of grace in the world, even as this man careens toward prison. Almost the converse of A Man Escaped, but with the same result for both protagonists: freedom.

Raskolnikov is a much more interesting character than a donkey... I'm glad I gave Bresson a second chance.

I remember absolutely loving the movie the first time I saw it. I recently rewatched it, but didn't enjoy it as much but I believe that's because I kept on being interrupted. The movie is Bresson's masterpiece including all of his wonderful stylistic choices. Like in every Bresson movie, the protaganist was told not to act, and because of Bresson's style the protaganist ends up being so multi-layered in his thought and personality. True art is here. As a lover of illiusions, the pickpocketing scenes were incredible. The train scene is highly memorable and the watch stealing is always a thrill. In the end, one of my favorite movies and probably my favorite Bresson film. He truly creates a film about man and false destiny here.
