The King's Speech (2010)

The King's Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country into war.

One of those films where every scene looks like a work of art. Extremely well done, well cast, and well acted. Great script, great film.

Vying for the number one spot in my list for best movies, the King's Speech has created an atmosphere of true awe around the lives and camaraderie of Bertie and Lionel. Only taking very, VERY small cinematic shortcuts, Mr. Hooper recreates King George VI's true hardships just before the onset of World War II. One of two movies to truly make me cry, the final speech as shown in this cinema will be one of the best actor portrayals of all time.

King George VI: I'm not... -here to discuss... -personal matters. Lionel Logue: Why are you here then? King George VI: Because I bloody well stammer! - This short irresistable, funny, incredibly well-written quote is...in fact everything I need to describe How Glorious this piece of cinema is. The King shall prevail, with this film by his side. Congratulations to the winner of the Academy for the "Best Picture" category- Only Because I bloody well stammer! -- I have to love that quote!

Tom Hooper's brilliantly crafted The King's Speech is an outstanding British period piece, featuring a delightfully witty screenplay, magnificent costumes and mesmerising performances from Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth.
