The King's Speech (2010)

The King's Speech tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country into war.

Hey, you should really see this! If you only see one movie this year, I very highly recommend "The King's Speech". It is a well written, excellently acted movie showing the efforts to overcome a fear. This fear, and it's subsequent effects on the world of politics in the WWII could make the difference between the British Empire outlasting the blitz or giving in to the German/Nazi push to conquer all of Europe. Colin Firth is wonderful as Prince Albert/King George VI and Geoffery Rush is outstanding as a therapist who is also an aspiring though untalented actor. Helena Bonham Carter is outstanding as Elizabeth (the queen mum we all know and love) and her relationship with her husband Prince Charles is one to admire. Prince/King Edward with his mistress Wallace Simpson add just the right tension to Prince Alberts determination to have to face his fear. I could really relate to the characters in this movie, and hope it does well this year.

This movie deserved every Oscar it won...even down to costuming. It is a masterful snapshot of a humble and almost unwilling English King "Bertie," played by Colin Firth, terrified of speaking in public because of a stammer. In the days just prior to WWII, England needed a strong face and voice to present to Its public, and Bertie wasn't it. Enter Geoffrey Rush, in another Oscar-winning performance, as a speech therapist who settles down to work....add Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Bess and you have magic...a twenty hankie movie!! Bring loads of tissue...

Tom Hooper's brilliantly crafted The King's Speech is an outstanding British period piece, featuring a delightfully witty screenplay, magnificent costumes and mesmerising performances from Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth.

Excellent movie. I haven't seen anything this good in cinema in a long time. Top British acting and direction with an awesome screen play. So so good...
