It’s disappointing that so much of the film feels like mere tilling of the soil.

Manohla Dargis 24 Apr 2019

Anchored by its two excellent leads, the movie is sympathetic and, for the most part, unsentimental.

Barry Hertz 30 Apr 2019

Yet despite the efforts of its stars and the inherent juiciness of its source material, the film falls flat when it should bounce with surreal glee. Perhaps it’s because Kelly is only telling half a story here.

Christopher Machell 16 Sep 2018

The film’s biggest weakness is its reluctance to interrogate the personas of its supporting characters.

Wendy Ide 11 Sep 2018

There’s nothing about this watchable but somewhat workmanlike dramatisation of the literary fraud behind author ‘JT LeRoy’ which is anywhere near as extreme as the story on which it is based. But Justin Kelly’s low key directing choices allow the two very fine central performances to take centre stage.
