Indochine (1992)

In colonial Vietnam, dashing French naval captain Jean-Baptiste, wealthy plantation owner Éliane Devries, and her adopted Vietnamese daughter Camillevare form the three points of a cross-cultural romantic triangle. As the struggle against European imperialism sweeps Indochina, Jean-Baptiste and Camille have to choose sides and Éliane faces the emotionally difficult challenge of raising the child of her daughter and ex-lover.

Starts off as a big soap opera, often contrived, but it got better toward the middle and became almost great at the end. The final scene was very nicely done.

Indochine exposes a journey to freedom that narrates the clash of cultural and political paradigms set colonial French Indochina. A film, which in itself a revolution, a stand on issues of colonialism and resistance, culture and politics, and history and tradition made relevant for the consumption of general viewership by infusing human interest schemes. Meaningful. Inspiring. A national treasure.

Glorious, glamorous and epic tale of love and obsession set on a rubber plantation in French colonial IndoChina. Deneuve, Dan Pham and Perez make an eye-popping centrepiece of Ill-fated lovers, their passions, betrayals and individual journeys mirroring the greater struggles of a country entering Civil War. Although flawed, Indochine has the passion and power to transport you to the decadent world of French Indo China, and wrap you up in its tumultuous upheaval.

A sweeping, sophisticated epic that is beautiful visually and intellectually. The relationship based metaphors are subtle and don't take away from the overall construction of the film or story.

Intense, sad love story that I stumbled on once and sobbed my eyes out over. I could give a flip about Catherine Deneuve, but Vincent Perez is the main reason I like this.
