Lizzie tries to find the seemingly impossible balance between family drama, murder mystery, and queer romance. Though it's a compelling idea, it doesn't work-the forbidden love story isn't fleshed out enough for that motive to be believable.

Unfortunately, the film never quite crosses that line into campy territory, merely teasing what a less serious treatment of Lizzie's story might look like.

Lizzie is heavily influenced by old-school horror flicks, with the soundtrack emphasizing the creaks and groans of the ancient house and the soft glow of a candle turning a hallway into a mass of imposing shadows, and Macneill's slow-burn approach may not work for everyone. But thematically, it couldn't arrive at a better time: as we witness Andrew Borden's demise, it's hard not to envision in his place any number of rich men who used their power to subjugate and sexually abuse women, and even harder not to cheer when Lizzie, a blood-soaked vision of feminine rage, emerges from the carnage.

Directed with restraint by Craig William Macneill, Lizzie never quite gets to what made Lizzie Borden tick, but it’s possible no film ever could. But it remains an entirely watchable drama thanks in no small part to the charisma of its two lead women.
