The Keep (1983)

Set during World War II, a German army garrison is sent to guard a mountain pass in a village in Romania's Carpathian mountains and sets up barracks in an ancient stone fortress. Two of the soldiers unwittingly release a mysterious entity that kills or corrupts those within its influence, drawing the attention of a Gestapo commander, a Jewish scholar, and a mysterious traveller.

Amazing film, like Hellraiser 2, what I think is great about the film is the surrealistic and menacing dreamscape, along with the awesome soundtrack, this time by Tangerine Dream. Nothing like the novel, but still very novel in it's own way. A very special film.

Vastly underrated, this a completely fascinating film in eerie mood and supernatural atmosphere. Good sound design in music and effects. Production design, especially in the Keep set itself is very effective. To say more, for those who haven't been inside yet, would be most unsettling.........

It's a bit of a muddled mess, but there are still hints of greatness throughout, and it manages to stand as a pretty effective film overall. For all its faults, The Keep boasts a moody, oppressive atmosphere, appropriately bleak production design, creepy and effective use of sound, a stellar cast and a top-notch monster design. On the down side, the score is a bit silly, and the lead actress has a terminal case of 80s hair, but neither is much of a deal breaker (if you're able to roll with everything else, that is). As it stands, I really liked this one, but I would kill to see the three hour director's cut, as I feel it could be something really special.

An interesting movie about a deadly force on the loose in an old keep which the Nazis have captured. The special effects are amazing especially that of the demon.
