The screenplay is actually fairly ordinary in terms of structure (anyone saying otherwise isn't paying attention--note the disappearance around 26 minutes in and that Act III is entirely facing resolution). But so many seem to miss that because it /feels/ messy, frustrating and real. That's quite a testament to the writer, director and cast.

Sachs' use of a gay relationship doesn't cast any particular new light on the subject of addiction, nor does addiction offer new insight into gay relationships.

Excellent movie! Thure Lindhardt is an amazing actor in this film. He is so expressive, making his intentions clear even when he isn't saying a word. I left the theatre very much contemplative and asking myself the questions that Ira Sachs raised. The film didn't give any answers, but I don't think it was meant to.
