The Hallow (2015)

Deep within the darkness of secluded forest land in rural Ireland dwells an ancient evil. Feared by the nearby superstitious villagers as cursed creatures who prey upon the lost, their secrets have been kept from civilization and remain on their hallowed ground. But when a conservationist from London moves in with his wife and infant child in order to survey the land for future construction, his actions unwittingly disturb the horde of demonic forces. Alone in a remote wilderness, he must now ensure his family's survival from their relentless attacks.

The Hallow is a dark and twisted fairy tale that is a horrifying twist on the genre with spectacular special effects and vividly grotesque folklore.

Had so much fun watching this scary-tale. Set against a haunted forest in Ireland, a married couple battles creepy critters that go bump in the night.

Nice use of the creepy fairy legends of the past but this is a bit of a slow starter that doesn't do anything particularly new. Good effects though and no one can turn down a film with a flaming scythe in it.

A pretty straightforward movie if ever there was one. Couple goes to house in the woods, doesn't listen to locals, bad stuff happens. Think Evil Dead but with Celtic mythology rather than deadites, it's kinda' like that. But for such a simple premise the movie is so damn good. It's unrelentingly creepy, excruciatingly tense, and profoundly creative. I love taking the fairy mythology and showing its creepy side, it's a side that exists in the mythos but we seldom see. Part of me wishes they would have gone more into the monsters world showing their motives and culture, but then again if they explained things it may have minimized the creepy factor, so I can't really fault them for not doing so. A pretty simple film, but the most effective of horror are, and this is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time.
