Who writes these synopses? Cary Grant is far from "befuddled;" the banter, what there is of it, is sophomoric; and the only fantasy is that it is a comedy. It wants desperately to be a French farce, but is it not French, and it is not a farce, except in that it wants us to believe that any woman married to Cary Grant would run off to London for a week with Robert Mitchum at all, let alone after knowing him for at most an hour. It is painfully dull, and substitutes lengthy exposition for character and plot development. The humor is broad, obvious, and contrived. The actors all give it the old school try, but even their professionalism cannot make up for the lack of dramatic tension, sharp dialogue, and sophisticated humor.

Non tra le migliori commedie dellâ??epoca, ma certo un film simpatico e divertente, nel quale figurano tre star del calibro di Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr e Robert Mitchum. Grant interpreta un conte inglese decaduto, che per sbarcare il lunario Ã¨ costretto a far diventare la propria tenuta unâ??attrazione turistica. Nonostante i problemi di ordine economico, Grant conduce una vita serena con la moglie Deborah Kerr, fino a quando non arriva a visitare il castello un miliardario americano (Robert Mitchum) che si innamora di sua moglie, ricambiato. Cary Grant si trova dunque costretto ad interpretare, suo malgrado, il ruolo del marito â??cornuto e feliceâ??, fino a quando lâ??intera vicenda non si risolverÃ , in modo un poâ?? rocambolesco. Cary Grant e Robert Mitchum non sono molto convincenti nella parte, mentre Deborah Kerr Ã¨ forse lâ??interprete piÃ¹ azzeccata. Da ricordare anche il ruolo del maggiordomo, devoto e depresso, che Ã¨ una presenza costante in tutto il film, protagonista di innumerevoli gag.

Cary Grant and Moray Watson are wonderful in this brilliantly odd film. Unfortunately, both Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum are woefully uncharismatic. Thus, the movie swings from brilliance to boredom from scene to scene. If the viewer can push through these moments of tedium, then the film is worth watching for the better parts.

Jean Simmons steals most of the scenes. The whole cast is brilliant though! It could have been a bit better but the humour and quick on its feet dialogue makes up for it!

Everyone in this movie - adapted from a flummery stage comedy by Hugh and Margaret Williams - stands around like mannequins in Bond Street stores.
