Election (1999)

Tracy Flick is running unopposed for this year's high school student election. But Jim McAllister has a different plan. Partly to establish a more democratic election, and partly to satisfy some deep personal anger toward Tracy, Jim talks football player Paul Metzler to run for president as well.

So brilliantly fantastic... Hip, smart and slick. Check it out!

Reese Witherspoon is adorable, and the writing it sublime. Need I say more?

This is one of very few examples I can think of where the movie is actually better than the book. Tom Perrotta still deserves credit for his innovative premise and clever social satire, and the film keeps these elements firmly intact, but it doesn't give as much screen time to some of the less relevant side plots or the characters you couldn't care less about, which is only an improvement. The adaptation is also comedic genius. This was the hardest and most frequently I'd laughed at a movie in a while, and it's largely due to the flawless casting, especially of Broderick and Witherspoon. They know when to play it straight, when to exaggerate for effect, and to always take their goofy, ridiculous roles as seriously as possible, much to our amusement. I also can't say enough good things about the music. I'm used to music enhancing drama, but it isn't as often that a comedy's creative choice of music has actually made me laugh harder.

My appreciation grows every time I watch this pitch-perfect satire. Payne gets more right here than in any of his other films. The use of voice-over is particularly effective, perhaps the best since Allen's Hannah & Her Sisters.

Reese Witherspoon is a tornado. One of the great performances ever.
