The Dawn Patrol (1938)

In 1915 France, Major Brand commands the 39th Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. The young airmen go up in bullet-riddled "crates" and the casualty rate is appalling, but Brand can't make the "brass hats" at headquarters see reason. Insubordinate air ace Captain Courtney is another thorn in Brand's side...but finds the smile wiped from his face when he rises to command the squadron himself. Everyone keeps a stiff upper lip.

The anti-war rhetoric IS rather shallow and poorly thought, but it also is brief -- as in, one or two lines of dialogue. Everything else is uniformly wonderful. The acting is very naturalistic for 1938, there is real chemistry between the three main actors, Errol Flynn is perhaps at his nicest and most likable, though still quite roguish. And David Niven is absolutely hilarious. Together they are heartwarming and brilliant. The portrayal of the war is realistic in how it wiped out the entire young generation, yet it is not gory or graphic, or even totally depressing. Most importantly, the movie argues correctly for the need for heroes, something even Hemingway didn't understand.

This World War I war drama offers one of Errol Flynn's finest performances - Flynn's one of my favorite actors, and I grew up on his swashbuckler movies, so it's always interesting to see him in other types of roles besides sword-swinging woman-wooing daredevils. He also has an excellent supporting cast to work with, including David Niven and Basil Rathbone. As with Flynn, it's a treat to see Basil Rathbone in a different type of role - but it's weird to see them talking as friends instead of dueling with swords. Also a powerful anti-war film, about the futility and ultimate tragedy of warfare.

WWI fighter pilots over France. The cast is great and the "small" moments are emotionally charged: duty, fraternity and frustration are explored in this beautiful film.

Cinematic gold. Great hammy over-acting by Rathbone with a nice pacey story. Gives you a glimpse of what people had to endure in War.
