In 1984 East Berlin, dedicated Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler begins spying on a famous playwright and his actress-lover Christa-Maria. Wiesler becomes unexpectedly sympathetic to the couple, and faces conflicting loyalties when his superior takes a liking to Christa-Maria.

rarely have i seen a film this good. i was saddened to hear that ulrich muhe died shortly after this movie was released, which is a shame, because his work in here is nothing short of brilliant. he is one of the biggest and greatest heroes i can ever remember seeing in a movie, yet he has practically no interactions with anyone but himself. remarkable acting, likewise with directing - i am shocked this was the director's FIRST movie! its thrilling, its dramatic, its shocking, its funny, its emotional! i cant find a flaw! possibly one of the GREATEST movies I have ever seen
