The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)

In 1920s Ireland young doctor Damien O'Donovan prepares to depart for a new job in a London hospital. As he says his goodbyes at a friend's farm, British Black and Tans arrive, and a young man is killed. Damien joins his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army, but political events are soon set in motion that tear the brothers apart.

Powerful with great performances, and Loach manages to keep the pace well balanced for such a political story. It should be accessible even to those with no knowledge or understanding of Irish history and politics. Great work on all fronts, and a must for Ireland buffs and those who like to stir up their revolutionary and socio-political outrage. A good political conversation-starter as well.

Ken Loach's incendiary film about the Irish troubles is many things.Set around the civil war that erupted when the British/Irish peace treaty split the Irish Republican Army in half, the stroy,beautifully written by Paul Laverty,focuses in on two brothers on either side of the battle.With a stirring performance from Cillian Murphy,and an unflinching eye for the brutality of this war,Loach crafts a film of real gut and heart.Moving and relevant, much like the majority of Loach's work.

While most of the fighting that takes place in the movie is between the Irish and the British, the movie is really about the underlying conflicts of the Irish Civil War and the resulting political divide that is still present in Ireland. Its a tough watch, but well worth it.

Absolutely devastating film about the Irish War of Independence and subsequent Civil War. Cillian Murphy and Padraic Delaney as brothers bound - and then torn apart - by political ideals, are both excellent.
