The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)

In 1920s Ireland young doctor Damien O'Donovan prepares to depart for a new job in a London hospital. As he says his goodbyes at a friend's farm, British Black and Tans arrive, and a young man is killed. Damien joins his brother Teddy in the Irish Republican Army, but political events are soon set in motion that tear the brothers apart.

Wow, this movie blew me away. An amazing account of something that really gains minimal recognition in history (I honestly didn't know anything about this before the film). It is brutal but real, nothing is dressed up to be more than it is. At some points, it is painful to watch, but the film itself is extremely powerful, telling the story of a true point in history that caused men to first unite then turn on each other. Cillian Murphy is unsurprisingly flawless. The rest of the cast is a great addition. Whether to be informed of the events that took place from a personal view within Ireland, or to watch a stunningly well-done piece of cinema...see this film.

One of my new favorite movies. About two Irish brothers during the revolution during the 1920's, this film captures life in Ireland perfectly and unrelentingly. It's a shame it was never fully released in the US. It's a tough watch, though. The accents are almost impossible to understand the first time. Still, given the right setting, this movie is outright amazing. Given a couple more viewings, might put in on my top ten ever.
