Straw Dogs (1971)

David Sumner, a mild-mannered academic from the United States, marries Amy, an Englishwoman. There, David is ostracized by the brutish men of the village, including Amy's old flame, Charlie. Eventually the taunts escalate.

My favourite of Peckinpah's films, which I believe to be a widely misunderstood masterpiece. A lot of commentary on the film speaks as if the film is about the need for violence, while in fact it's about the need to take a stand. Hoffman's inability to draw the line early in the film clearly contributes to the events in the climax. His lack of ability to clearly recognize what's happening and assert his own stance throughout the film are what mark him off as not a fully functioning adult, not his aversion to violence. That his awakening takes the form of a violent opposition to intruders is an exaggerated way of making the point, but violence is not inherently involved. The film itself is really a masterpiece of suspense. It skillfully creates a menacing atmosphere from the start and increases it gradually over the film. Hoffman is really an improbable choice to star in a Peckinpah film, but he turns in one of his best performances of this era. Susan George, David Warner and Peter Vaughan are all on the top of their game.

Masterfully made thriller which examines the human predispostion to violence. The film starts off with an upbeat tone, you are introduced to a happy-go-lucky young couple played by Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, but from the moment Hoffman enters the small rural bar and has been introduced to the villagers, a sense of forboding arises the chips away at the tone and events culminate to the point that this becomes one of the most nihilistic films you may ever see. Watching the film is like sitting out in your backgarden on a deck chair with full knowledge that a storm is about to blow in. The acting is superb, Hoffman plays the meak intellectual with a hidden ferocity fantastically and Susan George gives such a performance that you wonder why she didn't turn up in more movies. A cult classic.

Violence is inside us, no matter how we hide it, we're all violents by nature.

An utterly uncomfortable and joyless viewing experience, but with it, Peckinpah creates a dark, unconventional masterpiece.

This often vilified tale of the extent of human violence is also one of the most wonderfully disturbing films ever made by Sam Peckinpah. It's tearing down of man and and society to the base level of territoriality and animalism is at once dark and brilliant. Violence is in us all.
