Deep inside the land of the gulags, this is the end of the line for some of Russia's most dangerous criminals - 260 men who have collectively killed nearly 800 people. The film delves deep into the mind and soul of some of these prisoners. In brutally frank and uncensored interviews the inmates speak of their crimes, life and death, redemption and remorselessness, insanity and hope. The film tracks them though their unrelenting days over several months, lifting the veil on one of Russia's most secretive subcultures to reveal what happens when a man is locked up in a tiny cell for 23 hours every day, for life. A startling insight into inscrutable minds and the forbidding world they have been condemned to.

Although directed in effectively creepy fashion by Roberto Buso-Garcia, the film’s leisurely pacing and overall restraint will likely leave genre fans dissatisfied even as its lack of depth will turn off art-house patrons.

If you like psychological/supernatural thrillers that are relentlessly grim and creepy, this is recommended. Others who like their horror to be at least a little on the fun side may find this just numbing.

Important Note: This film was directed by Harvard wunderkind Roberto Buso-Garcia, who directed the 1999 feature film 'Paging Emma', also filmed in Puerto Rico. Both films are incredibly fast-paced, and both involve you deeply when you inmerse yourself in trying to keep track of what's going on. Late actor Axel Anderson steals both movies with incredibly complex, moving performances. Six stars out of five!

The most wonderful film I have ever seen. Trust all these viewers who have given this masterpiece all those high ratings. They are not attempting to stuff the ballot box in favor of the film, like what some people wrote on this marvel-of-cinema's IMDb threads page. No, seriously, they are not. This film will be spoken about for generations to come. If you don't like it, like these so-called critics who have unfairly attempted to smear this gem, especially those "top critics" who have absolutely railed against it, then tough luck. Look at yourself in the mirror and make some changes. Not only should you watch this, you should pay as high an amount of money as available. Splurge. What do you think your hard earned cash is for?

It adds up to a methodically bland, intellectually sluggish exercise in guilt-tripping that's nonetheless still more interested in its rich and sexy characters than the supposed unfortunates.
