The film is a pretty good picture show, as we used to say, but anyone who has read Nelson Algren’s wonderfully poetic novel is likely to make invidious comparisons and be otherwise distracted, particularly when the film strives to narrow itself to a problem of drug addiction.

Quite possibly this is Sinatra finest performance; and one of Preminger's best too.

Intenso Frank Sinatra en el papel de un musico drogadicto que debe batallar contra sus demonios. El score de jazz es genial.

Frank Sinatra were a hell of actor in fact. he was cool and he was impressive in his minimalistic playing. this one is in fact one of the first movies that ever dealt with drugs and the habit. A great movie that you can´t miss

Anyone who wonders whether Frank Sinatra could act has obviously not seen this film. He may have won an Oscar for From Here to Eternity, but he should most definitely have gotten one for this film - a taboo topic, ahead of it's time perhaps. The tragedy is the topic's still so very current today.
