Birdman of Alcatraz (1962)

After killing a prison guard, convict Robert Stroud faces life imprisonment in solitary confinement. Driven nearly mad by loneliness and despair, Stroud's life gains new meaning when he happens upon a helpless baby sparrow in the exercise yard and nurses it back to health. Despite having only a third grade education, Stroud goes on to become a renowned ornithologist and achieves a greater sense of freedom and purpose behind bars than most people find in the outside world.

Heart-warming - Burt Lancaster is a ledge!

Excellent story with some very good, credible acting. Was even more enjoyable in the fact that we just visited Alcatraz and so knew some of the stories spoken about. I enjoyed Lancaster's role and also thought the way the actors aged as the years went on was very good and well before it's time (this was made in '62).

Birdman of Alcaltraz is definitely underrated. The acting in this film is brilliant. The movie is strikingly photographed and excellently directed prison drama about a convict, Robert Franklin Stroud, and his passion for his birds and his mother. Flawless performances and a moving script make this a classic and one of Burt Lancaster's greatest on-screen appearances.
