Birdman of Alcatraz (1962)

After killing a prison guard, convict Robert Stroud faces life imprisonment in solitary confinement. Driven nearly mad by loneliness and despair, Stroud's life gains new meaning when he happens upon a helpless baby sparrow in the exercise yard and nurses it back to health. Despite having only a third grade education, Stroud goes on to become a renowned ornithologist and achieves a greater sense of freedom and purpose behind bars than most people find in the outside world.

Though Lancaster's performance is a fine one, the role he plays of two time murderer & prisoner Robert Stroudt is undoubtedly sentimentalized emotionally, though most of the facts themselves of his 53 years behind bars are accurate. Both a murderer and debatedely a genius, His care for birds while in prison, and his research and discovery for treatments for their diseases made him famous.

Sad, beautiful film with an Oscar-worthy performance from Burt Lancaster. The real Stroud was a psychopath, but this characterization is really a sympathetic one. If you analyze only the performance, it's brilliant, and one that only Lancaster could have done.

A classic hands down. When it comes to prison movies this is one of the best. Burt Lancaster is in a class all to himself, he seemed to be able to act in what ever style required. This film shows that no matter how bad a person might be a mothers love is the altiment sacrifice.

88/100. This is such a fascinating film, and Burt Lancaster's bravura performance makes the film. It is always interesting and the subject matter was handled with creativity and style. The screenplay is very strong, the supporting cast is quite good. Karl Malden, Neville Brand, Betty Field, Telly Savalas and Edmond O'Brien all give memorable performances. Thelma Ritter however rises above them all and is just amazing. John Frankenheimer's intense direction is remarkable.

who would have thought a story about a jailmate and his birds could be so interesting? although, it's a bit of a misnomer to say birdman of alcatraz since he never had any birds while he was there.
