Demands that kind of close attention, and rewards it as well.

It’s an ambitious, often arresting film, but it lacks cohesion, and the seesawing plot and motivations seem more indecisive than mysterious.

This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The only thing suspensful about it was the discordant music score. Who knows if the actors were good? They had nothing to work with in an obtuse script, disconnected characters, and nothing to explain what was happening. The worst part of it was the last scene with inexplicable camera work and no relationship to what had gone before. Try again, Brady Corbet. You'd have to do better than this!

Completely gripping viewing.. Just being aware of the Treaty of Versailles is enough to understand the political machinations of the main characters. Beautifully underplayed, with a score that has its own personality, the film is mesmerising -and I need to watch again to discover it with the perspective of hindsight. So many nuances. Strong, intelligent performances that have left me pondering on the film for hours. Whilst I understand the impact of the result, I had a certain empathy for the boy who would be leader. There was a stunned silence in the (packed) cinema at the end and then an eruption of discussion. Always a good sign.

Alternating immense bombast with long stretches of longueur in its psychologically questionable evocation of the formative years of a future despot, the film is formally confident, stylistically inventive and intensely irritating.
