**** (out of four) A thrilling and substantial role for the great Burt Lancaster. He plays a former numbers runner Atlantic City. But, the city has changed and he feels left behind. He does have time to be attracted to his waitress neighbor (Susan Sarandon). This is a very adult and mature drama with well written character development and superb acting. Nominated for Best Picture, Actor, Actress, and Director.

I don't know who came up with Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster as a couple, but it was a great choice. A well paced film with a rather simple story told extremely well. Apart from a couple moments I could've done without it was a good movie with great acting. It's nice that it got nominated for Best Picture. And the very last scene is a nice touch.

Why did this win awards? It was a boring drama with an ending that leaves everything hanging. There were some great moments, but otherwise not worth watching.
