Many years ago, my ex-boss who was distributing this film in the US, passed me the tape and said: "Watch this". I was hooked from the first frame to the last. Zhou Xun proves she's a powerhouse when given meaty roles, and Lou Ye a filmmaker who handles his scenes and transitions well, albeit with less doses in his latter 2 films.

Beautifully made. The story itself is extremely fascinating! I would say it's way more interesting than Summer palace.

The doubling got a little too much for me, it took away the beautiful simplicity that the first half had.

Some incredibly despondent facial expressions in this film. It reminded me of a novella I may have read on a rainy Sunday: poetic and rich with symbolism, but ultimately not enough grit to make me really feel the place where the characters reside.
