The Sugarland Express (1974)

Married small-time crooks Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin lose their baby to the state of Texas and resolve to do whatever it takes to get him back. Lou-Jean gets Clovis out of jail, and the two steal their son from his foster home, in addition to taking a highway patrolman hostage. As a massive dragnet starts to pursue them across Texas, the couple become unlikely folk heroes and even start to bond with the captive policeman.

Fun first theatrical effort for Spielberg. A very cool role for Goldie Hawn.

What an awesome first official feature film. The music in this movie is amazing and the story is wicked.

Despite being a bit rough around the edges, and despite the spotty pacing, this is still alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, and is a very entertaining "first" from Spielberg (his first movie was Duel, but this was his first theatrical feature film). That's... Pretty much it. It's a chase movie, but the four leads have great performances, and the smaller tangential moments actually work better than the main story does at times.

Another one of Spielberg's greats. An interesting film about a big chase as a Texan couple take a trooper hostage to drive them to 'Sugarland' a town in Texas, to reclaim their wrongly adopted child. Kept my attention throughout, I was expecting a bad first attempt at a feature film from Spielberg, but he flew through this in flying colours. Highly recommended, this is vintage Spielberg.

This movie confounded my expectations every step of the way. Spielberg's first theatrical feature is a masterpiece of tone, balancing comedy, drama, action and suspense with a deft touch. It has so many funny moments intermixed with the suspense (and perhaps inevitability) of the scenario that I was constantly alert and enthralled. On top of all of this, a gorgeous piece of cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond and a memorable minimalist score from John Williams. They don't make them like this anymore.
