one of the first CHinese movies with sound on board. loaded with allegories on moral and the time depicted. very interesting from a historical and cultural perspective, albeit funny in a way that was not meant to be funny. i´ll save the words on knowing the past for later... definitely an experience, since you just don´t have it in todays cinema.

For its concentration of haunting emotion and sheer subtlety of texture, Spring in a Small Town is a masterpiece.

The film's emotional complexity lends it a weight that has sustained its influence over the decades.

Atmospheric, tense and intimate, Fei Mu's Xiao cheng zhi chun became a major source of inspiration for the fifth generation of Chinese directors in the eighties. The drama of the narrative is further enhanced by deep symbolism and lighting effects. The dilemma of the love triangle is never reduced to mere eroticism, but presented mainly as an ethical problem. Fei Mu sadly soon disappeared into oblivion, but the charismatic actress Wei Wei went on to have a successful acting carreer starring in numerous classic Hong Kong movies.

Spring in a Small town feels like a really good book. The plot is reminiscent of that of a novel more so than that of a movie, the wife's narration gives novel-like insights, the the film is shot in a way that reminds me of how I imagine books as I read. The characters here are well-drawn and the story is simple, but captivating.
