The Last Picture Show (1971)

High school seniors and best friends, Sonny and Duane, live in a dying Texas town. The handsome Duane is dating a local beauty, while Sonny is having an affair with the coach's wife. As graduation nears and both boys contemplate their futures, Duane eyes the army and Sonny takes over a local business. Each struggles to figure out if he can escape this dead-end town and build a better life somewhere else.

When a film is driven by characters and nothing else, you don't need the story. You are focus to appreciate the acting and the beautiful cinematography.

A fabulous example of taking a two hour film and making it feel like we are visitors who have been transported to another place and time; a time which encompasses the span of several months without any dull character developments.  The cinematography is spot-on gorgeous.

wonderful pacing. beautifully acted and filmed. a cinematic answer to winesburg, ohio. if you've never been to the small town in which i live, watch this movie and you will have been.

Another Larry McMurtry story, and a great one at that. I grew up in a small town in southwest Kansas, and had grandparents who lived in the Texas Panhandle near a small town. Peter Bogdanovich captures the desolate atmosphere of a small Texas town completely. I felt like I had walked down the streets of "Anarene" Texas myself. Parts of this movie can be depressing, but sometimes the emotions a movie makes you feel aren't always cheerful. This is one I could see a hundred times and not get tired of it.
