The Last Picture Show (1971)

High school seniors and best friends, Sonny and Duane, live in a dying Texas town. The handsome Duane is dating a local beauty, while Sonny is having an affair with the coach's wife. As graduation nears and both boys contemplate their futures, Duane eyes the army and Sonny takes over a local business. Each struggles to figure out if he can escape this dead-end town and build a better life somewhere else.

one of the best films ive ever seen. young and older people dealing with life in a small texas town. beautiful black and white picture with the amazing ben johnson and cloris leachmen in oscar winning supporting roles, with jeff bridges and cybill sheperd and timothy buttons all delivering wonderful performances from a brilliant script from larry mcmurtry and director peter bogdanovich.

One of my favorite movies, a great story and amazing performances, I love everything about this film. I don?t really know what I can say about this movie without over praising it like I already have. I?m glad it got some recognition at the Oscars. Along with watching the movie I read an article by Grover Lewis called ?Splendor in the Short Grass? about his experiences playing a small role in the film. It was a great read and had some fun stories about the behind the scenes stuff.

This subtle, adult ensemble piece is one of the most polished films I have ever seen. Outstanding direction, superb acting from everyone and a gut-wrenchingly powerful script. Every scene is filled with undertones of rising tension and sadness, and the mood is established beautifully through some ingenious lighting and shot composition. Filmmaking at its most daring.
