The now fifth Bela Tarr film I've seen has yet again left me amazed and now even mystified by everything that took place over the 145 minute running time. Other filmmakers have captured the spirit of what Tarr has done so well over the years, notably a hero filmmaker and inspiration for me, Gus Van Sant. But even Gus hasn't truly tapped into that sort of edge-of-your-seat real-time suspense that Tarr seems so effortlessly able to do. With only 39 shots and a simple but fascinating story, Tarr doesn't have time for down times, doesn't allow you room to become bored because everything is on a steady pace forward. His photography is such a way that keeps you interested and always guessing what he'll do next, where he'll cut next. There's not much left to say because everything you take in honestly feels indescribable. You try to put into words Tarr's directing style, and you're just left in awe and you can't quite find the right thing to say. But you feel it. You Feel it and that's what matters.

OK so it's slow - if you can't accept that then you will hate this film. The long takes are pretty hypnotic though, and even the most mundane activities - like two people walking around town silently - are interesting to look at. If you sit through these early sequences you will be rewarded with some amazingly complex scenes with angry mobs rioting and the camera dancing alongside to witness the destruction. The film as a whole makes you think a lot about the nature of people and their stupid, destructive ways. Does Bella Tarr seem overly pessimistic with his depiction of the violent mob? Well, based on how people behave when their sports team wins a championship, this movie doesn't miss the mark by much.

At first glance, Bela Tarr is like the reincarnation of Tarkovsky. But, as much of a feat as that is, that would be selling him short. There are not enough hours in the day for me to elucidate my feelings about this film -- I will keep it short and say that it belongs in that exclusive category of films that totally defy what you thought films could and should conceivably do. Also has one of the greatest opening scenes in the history of cinema.

While Tarr's newest epic, Werckmeister Harmonies, isn't intended for the shopping-mall crowd, it is more viewer-friendly and will please adventurous moviegoers.
