Black Book (2006)

Israel, 1956: Jewish teacher Rachel Stein rather unexpectedly meets an old friend at the kibbutz. It brings back memories of her experiences in the Netherlands during the war, memories of betrayal. In September 1944, Rachel's hiding place is bombed by Allied troops; she makes contact with a resistance member and joins a group of Jews to be smuggled across the Biesbosch to the freed South Netherlands. Only Rachel escapes a massacre by patrol Germans, and is rescued by a resistance group under the leadership of Gerben Kuipers, whose son is captured trying to smuggle weapons. Kuipers asks Rachel to seduce SS-hauptsturmführer Ludwig Müntze, a mission that she will soon learn that the boat attack wasn't a coincidence.

One of Verhoven's best films in ages! For some strange reason, I'd been putting off seeing this, but it is a remarkable thriller set in the final days of the Nazi occupation of Holland. Absolutely riviting film and not one to be missed.

A moving and thrilling film that concentrates on the Resistance and Nazis through the eyes of a jewish woman in 1944. It grips simply because of the excellent performances (especially from Carice van Houten and Sebastian Koch), the amazing cinematography and the fact that neither side is shown in simple black and white. Perhaps a little overlong this film grips from the beginning. The most surprising thing is that it is directed by Paul Verhoeven, the man who brought us Basic Instinct and (shudder) Showgirls. This has a maturity about it that suggests that he is happy to be away from the banality of Hollywood.

The best WW2 flick by far! not only it's awesomely gripping, but because it doesn't exactly draw the line between good or bad and illuminates more on an individual's will to survive and the feeling of morality. Rachel's heroine character is so original and motivating (if not inspiring).

This is outstanding! A must see for everyone, and a movie I'd consider buying on DVD. The film is in Dutch/German but you hardly notice the subtitiles as it's just so good. Fantastic acting and a great story with a terrific ending, this will grip you for every minute. I can't say enough about this film it's just so good! And amazing it's by Paul Verhoeven who did Showgirls. But then that wasn't a bad bad movie it was a good bad movie and so bad it was good etc etc etc.
