An underated entry into the canon of director Billy Wilder's work and a darker episode for the fiction's most famous sleuth. Robert Stephens is excellent as Holmes, as is Christopher Lee as elder brother Mycroft - and there is a neat twist on the 'Loch Ness' mystery. One for all you Conan-Doyle fans!

A different take on the myth if Sherlock Holmes. In this he is all too human: a drug addict, a homosexual, and not even too swift as a detective. At least the film is accomplished with talent, but it leaves a disquieting feeling of dissatisfaction seeing a heroic figure fail so many ways. The character one is lead to empathize with the most with loses at the end ... most irregular. Watch at your own peril.

Extraordinarily entertaining late entry into the Billy Wilder ouvre. Wilder and Diamond have crafted a complex mystery/comedy that has aged very well and is full of great performances from its principal actors. Robert Stephens makes a great Holmes, Colin Blakely is superb as Watson, and the supporting cast is top-notch. If you get a chance to watch this one, take it.

A different take on Sherlock Holmes. Wilder and writing partner I.A.L. Diamond spent years honing the script. Supposedly the script was so ironclad that whenever an actor paraphrased a line (no matter how minor), Diamond himself would yell "CUT!" and the scene would have to be redone (According to Maryl Streep in making of doc for Kramer vs. Kramer, Woody Allen has a similar working technique - "You know, there's a coma there." (whereas Robert Benton, director of Kramer vs. Kramer, is more into improv - as of course is Dustin Hoffman)
