Sayonara (1957)

Air Force Major Lloyd Gruver is reassigned to a Japanese air base and is confronted with US racial prejudice against the Japanese people. The issue is compounded because a number of the soldiers become romantically involved with Japanese women, in defiance of US military policy. Ordinarily, a by-the-book officer, Gruver must take a position when a buddy of his, an enlisted man, Joe Kelly, falls in love with a Japanese woman, Katsumi, and marries her. Gruver risks his position by serving as best man at the wedding ceremony.

A good film, well acted, fairly well directed, and this is just after seeing South Pacific! Remarkable!

Such a beautiful movie! The scenery, the story,Marlon Brando, all of it was beautiful! It's a little long but well worth it. It's such a heart-wrenching and at the same time heartwarming story. It's definitely a must watch. I'm sure at the time this came out it was still a very controversial issue. I'm not sure why Ricardo Montalban was cast as a Japanese man, but he did make a sexy one! It was a great, sweet, beautiful movie!

An amazing film! Deep, sad, poignant, rich, and important. Marlon Brando speaks in a wierd southern accent, and gives a terrible preformance in the film as a fighter pilot stationed in Japan. But the two best preformances in the film are from Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. They are fantastic together. They play a simple minded married couple who just plain love each other, but they are being separated by race and prejudice people. the Air Force dosen't want them together, and she can't come with him back to America. The movie is a very sad and powerful, but the ending is very happy and cheerful. I strongly reccomend this film!

a phenominally classic movie. so few people have seen this film and its a crying shame. there are so many levels to this movie, its sad and happy and respectful, for the time, romantic and visually amazing. its a wonderful film, you should see it!
