Sayonara (2015)

The world's first human-android acting duo, called Android Theater Project, is the collaborative brainchild of noted Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata and the leading robotics scientist Hiroshi Ishiguro. "Sayonara" is a remakable android play and has been adapted to feature film by the acclaimed filmmaker Koji Fukada (Hospitalité, Au revoir l'été). In this film project the setting of the story is largely expanded, depicting time and space in a way which can only be achieved in film, examining life and death though the communication between dying human and immortal android.

Five stars simply for the variety of Japanese theater genres shown, from matsubayashi to bunraku puppetry, this is like a perfect sampling of Japanese theater. The story itself is sad and moving (even though a bit dated, but can interracial disharmony and bigotry ever be dated?) and the acting is superb all around. Marlon Brando's mutterings at the beginning of the film clear up right after you tune into his line, "She has enormous... capacity to fill a bathing suit."

This is another one of those watershed films that is so far ahead of its time in dealing with issues of race, love, and marriage. Definitely one of Brando's most moving endeavors, overshadowed only by the even more masterful performances of Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki . This one is heartbreaking every time.

An amazing film! Deep, sad, poignant, rich, and important. Marlon Brando speaks in a wierd southern accent, and gives a terrible preformance in the film as a fighter pilot stationed in Japan. But the two best preformances in the film are from Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. They are fantastic together. They play a simple minded married couple who just plain love each other, but they are being separated by race and prejudice people. the Air Force dosen't want them together, and she can't come with him back to America. The movie is a very sad and powerful, but the ending is very happy and cheerful. I strongly reccomend this film!

Oh Marlon Brando. Yes, his accent sucks but still, get past that and this is one of the most poignant movies ever. A timeless story about racism and expectations and most of all...LOVE.
