This was a little hokey at times but it is adapted from a stage play and that occasionally happens. The scene where William Holden and Kim Novak dance at the picnic is the one to watch for. With the Chinese lanterns reflecting in the lake at dusk and one of the most beautiful actresses of that in her prime. Since it was actually filmed in the midwest it makes it all the more authentic feeling. Ben Mankiewicz, the day host on TCM, said that William Holden is actually a terrible dancer in real life and the dance scene was filmed with the cinematographer circling around he and Kim Novak. He also added that he stepped on her feet a few times. I just thought that was a funny bit of information!! This is a great love story and if you haven't seen it you should!

What works for Inge on stage now seems to hardly work on film. This is the second movie of an Inge play I've seen and I've been disappointed by both. The first one was "Bus Stop." I didn't know where to begin with that one - Monroe was trying so hard to prove that she was an "actress" that she came across as constipated. "Picnic" transferred better to screen than "Bus Stop," I'll admit, but I still ended up wishing I was watching it on stage. Casting is where I had the biggest problem with "Picnic:" Holden is too old; Russell too glamorous; neither Novak or Field are good actors. Holden and Russell have some good moments, but I didn't for a second believe any of their work. Novak's vapidness might have worked only if I'd believed that she truly wished to be anything but just pretty. Arthur O'Connell is charming and even as Howard, and there's nothing like seeing Verna Felton, the voice of so many animated characters of my youth (and before), in the flesh. But keep Inge on stage, please.

Very interesting looking back in time, but had to laugh at the stereotypes. I wonder if it was that era's version of "Footloose"?

I was interested in watching this because of the talk about the revival on Broadway. I didn't really like it. Maybe it was too innocent or it was dated. William Holden's performance was too over the top and Kim Novak as Madge was kind of boring. I really liked Susan Strasberg as Millie(the younger sister) and Rosalind Russell as Rosemary Sydney (the old maid teacher). I thought they both did really great and added dimension to the movie.
