Everyone should see this. I love these extravegant old hollywood films. I mean, come on, Agnes Moorehead, Joseph Cotten, Anne Baxter, and Orson Welles? What's not to love?

A hugely and sadly underestimated film by Welles using a similar cast to the one in 'Citizen Kane'.Based on Booth Tarkington's novel, it offers a timeless but ultimately tragic interlude into the idyllic world before the motor car . Theuse of clever candescent lighting and errie shadow are pitched against the spartan black'n'white background to make this tale as alluring as it is memorable. Chopped down to a mere 88 minutes due to a fledgling performance at the Box Office the film still spins to the standard of a cinematic masterpiece. What is 'popular' is by no means a ready recommendation; and what is underestimated by no means short of genuine artistic greatness - this film is a deliberate play on the evocative powers of a master director.A grand statement on the decline of human values in the face of industrialization and the emergence of 'new money'. Watch and simply marvel.

A very depressing film as it goes along, a display of the fall of a family. I really liked how the main character is by source the link to everything, which always gets us to see from his perspective even if the camera point of view is not always from him. Also, the directing is splendid, with details being alluded to and the shots very well devised. The dialogue here is by far the best of any Orson Welles film in my opinion.

I have expressed hatred and frustration towards the other works of Orson Welles but this is probably one of the few of his movies that are after my heart. I mean, a wealthy and spoiled family who go through a lot of tough times and all the melodrama? Really worthy of my affection. But I am kind of pissed off since that asshole doesn't get his real comeuppance, the one that he truly deserves. Maybe, Welles' original ending could have given me that satisfaction.

As great as this film is, one can only wonder what a masterpiece it would have been had Welles' original cut been preserved.
