When the film gives in to the roiling emotions that in some sense must guide a story centered on doomed love and self-sacrifice, one is immersed in the experience. But too often the film takes itself to the remove of a clinical narration that almost always is simply explaining the images already on the screen. The problem, then, is a lack of trust in the power of the core material. Mason's and Gardner's scenes together and Mason's scenes alone showcase best what the movie could have been.

Intiguing, but slow-moving Albert Lewin film

An unique blend of melodrama & fantasy...a hard to define genre film that is genuinely engrossing through out. The story of a diary from a 17th Century Dutchman & a strange man that appears on a Spanish island & instantly draws the attention of local beauty played by Ava Gardner. The history of the man is strangely linked to the diary & the romance itself is quite unusual. The film is shot is the beautiful locations & the use of color is extraordinary...a mesmerizing film.

One of the epic star vehicles of Ava Gardner‘s career earned a nice restoration a couple of years back. So if nothing else, Ava at her peak in glorious Technicolor should be lure enough to draw one to “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman.”
