From a story perspective, nothing happens in the film's 'last act,' but from an emotional perspective, everything happens. Minnelli's performance leaves its peak and soars.

i love musicals... and this one is by far one of the best.. the scene whe De Niro almost begs Liza Minelli to marry her.. so passionately.. is the best... I loved it

Yeah, it's indulgent, but unlike An American in Paris, it never had me checking my watch.

No, it no one's best work. However, many critics have unfairly bashed this film when it has an amazing soundtrack, great chemistry between Liza and De Niro and a lot of spunk. It is no 'Cabaret', but then Scorsese is no Fosse.
