This movie features actors who frequently under-perform, performing perfectly. This wouldn't be the worst Coen brothers movie to see as your first. Gritty setting, realistic people in the fakery of Hollywood, and a broad spectrum of mental anguish make for bad times in the best way.

Meticulously detailed, surreal portrait of an artist's struggle in Hollywood. I often wonder if the whole movie is supposed to be a dream. Barton Fink is certainly one of the funniest Coen brother movies. There's something about the sheer madness of everything in the movie that I find extremely hilarious. For me, the film is easily on par with Lebowski, Hudsucker, and Arizona in terms of comedy. I'm still amazed that the Coens were allowed to make a movie like this, even with the credentials they had by 1991.

Don't even bother unless movies really are your thing, and especially not if you need to completely understand a film to enjoy it. It's a complex film but the imagery is just so powerful. The Coens obviously were influenced by the Shining, and they give The Hotel Earle a similar sense of horror about it. Turturro and Goodman are both fantastic.

Another masterpiece by the Coen bros. I generally prefer their comic side, but Barton Fink is the exception that proves the rule: cryptic, visionary, metaphorical, this work about the Artist and the rose of Inspiration goes far beyond a mere representation of an artist and its crisis, it is a metaphor of art itself, and how it is affected by the artist's personal experiences. Every time I watch it, I find some new, intriguing details.

This may possibly be John Goodman's best performance ever, not to mention a great commentary on that shit factory known as Hollywood.
